CLUB HISTORY
The story so far (15/02/08)

At the annual Presentation Evening of the Redbridge Raiders Girls Football Club in May 2000, the Mayor of Redbridge, Councillor Maureen Hoskins, spoke of "The great success that they have achieved".  Redbridge was "On the map" as she liked to put it. The Mayor later invited the captains of the Ladies teams to a Town Council meeting where she presented the Essex County and Greater London League Trophies and Essex County FA Cup.
The Club started life in 1987 when a few youngsters at Glade Primary School, Clayhall, decided that they wanted to be football players.  By October 1988, with "girls football" becoming the fastest growing sport in the country, it was decided to formally establish a girls soccer club for Redbridge, and call it the "Raiders".
Although limited at first to 5-a-side competitions and "friendlies" the club grew rapidly and for the 89/90 season a team was entered in the Southwark & District (later to be called the Southern) Girls Junior League.  In their first year of League Football they came second.  The club continued to grow in both size and prestige, and by 1993 had three teams competing in separate age bands.
The Football Association had by now taken control of the women's game in Britain so it was therefore decided to form a management committee to run the Club and bring it "into line".  By this time the club was also representing Redbridge in inter-borough events such as the London (Heathrow) Youth Games, and continues to do so.
In 1994, the club now having four teams, it became necessary to enter the Greater London Women's League with a composite team of 14-18 year olds, (up until then it had been a strictly Under-16 club).  In their first year of senior football they achieved second place in the sixth division.  (This same team, with a few changes over the years, won promotion to the Premier Division in year 2000, hence the Mayor’s attendance at the presentation evening.)
During the 1999/2000 season the club fielded four teams:  Under-11 & Under-13, Junior Ladies (Essex County League Champions and FA Cup winners), and the Senior Ladies (Greater London League Division 1 Champions).  The Ladies teams then had to be amalgamated because so many of the "Seniors" went to universities in 2001 and 2002.  Their stay in the Premiership that year was assured by Rainham Ladies who, having lost half their team for the same reason, joined Redbridge in 2002.
For the 05/06 season we fielded seven teams—U10,U11,U12,U13,U15, reserves and ladies.
Like most clubs there have been highs and lows over the years but the "Raiders" have succeeded and survived because it has been able to adapt to constant change.  As the standard of football increases so does the expectation of the players.  For this reason the club moved to the bigger and better London Marathon Playing Fields ground off Forest Road, Hainault.  It is here that they also run a successful Junior Soccer School for Girls on Saturday mornings.
In September 2003, Redbridge Raiders joined forces with Redbridge Football Club whose home ground is at Station Road, Barkingside.
No matter how successful a club is, its survival depends on a steady recruitment of new members, particularly at junior level.  So if you are a player yourself, or the parent of a soccer-playing daughter, you can be assured of a warm welcome.  The "Raiders" are one of the best clubs around, well organised and caring. The interests and welfare of the players is our first priority. In April 2007 the club confirmed it’s continual development by achieving FA charter standard.

Would moving kids' football to a summer game help improve the development of young footballers?
Yes - better pitches mean a better chance to develop technique/skills
No - wouldn't make any real difference to development
Maybe - but I'd be worried about more injuries on firm pitches
